GIZIAWI #1 Giziawi #1 was a three-day public art event organized by ZCAC (Zoma Contemporary Art Center). It was the first show that ZCAC presented. The show was sponsored by forty-five organizations both nationally and internationally. Ninety-five percent of the support was in-kind and five percent was monetary. It took place on Meskel Square, one of the most central and popular outdoor public venues in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia.
Giziawi #1 was coordinated with the 6th International Conference on Ethiopian Art, which took place from November 6 to 8 at the Addis Ababa University Institute of Ethiopian studies. During that same week, ZCAC organized several exhibitions in galleries, museums, art studios and individual homes. These exhibitions were organized to show the diversity of the young artists' work to the international art community who came for the conference. The majority of the artists were graduates from the Addis Ababa University Fine Art and Design School and a few were self-taught.
