ZCAC YUCATAN
ZCAC Yucatan is an art center founded and directed by Ernesto
Novelo, a young artist, collector, curator and lawyer. ZCAC Yucatan is
based on the same principle of ZCAC (Zoma Contemporary Art Center)
in Ethiopia. In 2005, Ernesto received a grant from the American
Center Foundation to do an art research anywhere in the world.
Ernesto chose to come to Ethiopia where he stayed and worked for one
month with the founder of ZCAC Ethiopia, Meskerem Assegued. During
his stay, he did a workshop and exhibited the works of twelve artists from
Yucatan, Mexico in the Addis Abeba University Fine Art and Design
School. In addition, he did several drawings about his impression of
Addis Abeba. All the artwork he brought from Yucatan were donated to
ZCAC Ethiopia.
When Ernesto returned to Merida, Yucatan, he opened ZCAC Yucatan
in a small two story house in Merida. The center has a small library on
contemporary art, collection of unknown young artists and
international acclaimed artists from Yucatan and other parts of Mexico.
There are also some collections from Ethiopian artists. ZCAC Yucatan
has regular workshops for children and young artists. At least twice a
year, ZCAC Yucatan curates group and solo exhibitions of different
artists in various venues in and around Merida. Sergio Pech, Reinaldo
Pech, Daniel Pech and Ugo are active members of ZCAC Yucatan
since its conception.
